"So that's what a leg cramp feels like"...I found myself saying today on the way back to the church. Bryan, Su, and I detoured from our route on the return (I think we picked up an extra mile in the adventure). I was a bit surprised that the hills were as "significant" as they were up 4th st. toward Mayberry Park. When we finally got to Mayberry Park, we weren't in a big hurry to run those same hills on the way back, so we headed over the Truckee and got on Mayberry and went over to McCarran from there.
When we looked up THE HILL from Mayberry to I-80, I thought to myself, "Helen and Jessica must really hate me right about now." As we started in that direction, my right leg began to cramp (like someone was digging into the bone with a wooden spoon)...it was really strange, but I must have been sweating a lot more than I thought I was, and I needed some electrolytes quick. I took a Gu and walked up the hill where we all stopped at Q-doba and filled up our water bottles (we were going thru some water today).
The cramping passed and we headed down the home stretch and things were going pretty well...that is until we were about 3 miles from the church and Su started talking about pizza (I think she started it...my brain was getting a little foggy at this point). Immediately Brian jumped into the conversation and talked about some specialty dish that he loved to prepare and cook. Before long, I was mentally in the middle of a large deep dish pizza with mushrooms, cheese, onions and lean ground beef--it was torture!
But on the bright side, I did forget about my leg for a while :-)
Well, I'm off to a shower and a nice soak in the hot tub...and I almost hate to ask it but....how did the rest of you do? (Helen/Jessica...I really am sorry for that extra hill...sort of). Ben you missed a really good time. (next time wear your shorts to church...your brother does). Becky...I hope you didn't mind running by yourself...did you make the loop on 7th without incident?
Be sure and continue to hydrate tonight and tomorrow...it was a BEAR today with the heat, and I'm really, REALLY proud of all you guys!
God bless you!
Dennis

All I can say is...Jessica's last name is really "Angel".
I had some gu near Mayberry and when we started up the hill (I don't hate you Dennis, but I didn't really LIKE you on that hill) I got a side cramp, and from then on it was very challenging. Jessica was amazing, stayed with me and we walked, ran, walked, walked, walked, ran a little...etc. I was very dizzy & lethargic (she gave me some of her power bar) and my hands were blown up like sausages. Thank the good Lord above, we made it back! I have never been so happy to see Hillside Church!
I will take that 10 mile on Mayberry in the snow & wind ANY DAY over the hills & heat today. But, yes Dennis, I know I will be grateful to you on May 6th. I realize today was necessary to train and do the whole mental thing.
Thank you Jessica for not talking about pizza :)
See you all next Sunday-have a great week!
Sue came home and commenced to puke her guts out . . . when she finished she said she had a really good time . . . I still don't know if she was talking about the run or about her ride on the regurgitron . . .
...I think I mentioned to Sue something like, "if I were to eat that banana, I would be hurling it up in no time."...same thing happened to Brian at last year's marathon...puke city...after a hard run it is too much of a sugar shock on an empty stomach...
Welcome to 17 miles Sue! (things really ARE different)
Helen and J. AngEl...I am really proud of you both. This was a VERY tough run, no doubt about it. The 1/2 will be a cakewalk for you now.
This is good stuff. It reminds me of a very few school teachers that made learning very challenging. I look back and am grateful. With that being said, I'm glad that I ran on Saturday at 7 in the morning. :>)
Yesterday was ok for me until I stopped running. I felt like #$%! when we finished our "little massage" I have never felt that bad after a long run. Dennis, you were right, the banana was a BAD idea! I really did puke when I got home. I couldn't eat or drink anything until about 9:00 last night.
The good news is that I feel remarkably well today. I am a little sunburned and a little sore but other than that, I feel great!
I think I will be back for more next week. See ya then!
It was a great run/walk! I was glad to have Helen to run with. She is awesome and I was proud of the both of us when we finished!! It felt and feels good to know that we can complete the half!! (Optimistic :)) I look forward to running next week!
I think I did okay. The first five miles were pretty bad because my left foot swelled out of the shoe - big surprise. I stopped at king's row and 7th and just let my foot breath. I took two gu packets on the way back and i think it did the best yet. i ran quickly and i was surprised that jessica didn't catch up with me! actually i was proud she didn't! I was really tired for the rest of the day but other than that I was fine. Tired on Monday to but I ate pretty well all that weekend so I wasn't hurting.
I won't see you guys for two weeks! have fun.
